Annotate by finding the answer to each question below, then answering with your own comment on the margins.

Chapter 30

2. Atticus and Heck Tate have a heated argument, as Atticus assumes Heck is ready to cover up Bob Ewell’s killing as a move to protect Jem. Who is Heck really trying to protect? Why does Heck fight so hard to protect this person?

3. Heck Tate has tampered with evidence to make it appear that Ewell was killed by falling on his own knife. What piece of evidence did Heck remove from the scene of the crime?

4. Did Heck Tate do the right thing? Explain your answer.

5. Scout, who was confused about the actual cause of Mr. Ewell’s death, agrees with Heck Tate’s decision and utters an elegant line in support of him. Write that line.

2. In what way is Scout’s neighborhood/street similar to the Mruna tribe in Africa?

3. Reread the first line from chapter 1. How do the events in the final chapters connect to this line? Do you find this storytelling technique effective? Why or why not?

Students,

It is VERY important that you INDENT each paragraph in your essay and start EACH paragraph with a TRANSITION WORD or PHRASE!

As I continue to grade last months essays, I have noticed a lot of you have forgotten to do this. Remember, in the FSA writing you will have to type your essay.

Part of the FSA rubric is ORGANIZATION; they expect you to ORGANIZE your essay by

- Starting each paragraph with a transition phrase (I gave you a TON of examples in your ICE packet)

- indenting (You can click on tab OR you can press space bar 5 times)

AND

- Spacing in between each paragraph

I will be looking for these components in your TOM ROBINSON essay.

Due: 12/17/2018

 Students,

A couple of updates:

         * Next week, Monday, December 17th and Tuesday, December 18th, you will have a Reading Mid-Year Assessment that you will be taking during class. This will count as a  test grade for the 2nd nine weeks.

         * Your Tom Robinson FSA Argumentative Essay will be due on Wednesday, December 19th /Thursday, December 20th. Please be sure it is TYPED, PRINTED, DOUBLED SPACED on 12p. FONT. If you are going to be absent, send me the essay via email. If not it will be a "Z" in the grade book.

Below is an example from a student of a GREAT introduction paragraph with an even greater THESIS:

"Maycomb, Alabama is a prejudiced county deeply segregated and instilled with Jim Crow laws in the middle of The Great Depression. Not only is the nation's economy at a loss, so is the respect and social class of African American's in Harper Lee's coming-of-age novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. A negro, Tom Robinson, has been accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell, who stands at the bottom of Maycomb's social hierarchy. Four testimonies including that of Heck Tate, Maycomb's Sheriff and Bob Ewell, Mayella's father. Mayella Ewell, the prosecutor and Tom Robinson the defendant, are the epicenter of the case. Several inconsistencies in the alleged crime stirred doubts about Tom's guiltiness.   Therefore, Tom Robinson is not guilty because there was no medical evidence concerning Mayella's subsequent state and the inconsistencies of stories from supposed witnesses intensely contradict one another.

****PLEASE REMEMBER THAT I GAVE YOU A VERY SPECIFIC WORKSHEET WITH VERY SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS on how to complete the essay!!! USE IT*********

6. Symbolically, what does the physical structure of the courthouse show us about the people of Maycomb?
7. Why didn’t Atticus tell his children that he had to defend Tom Robinson, that he was appointed by the court and didn’t really have a choice about taking the case?
8. Why do the four men give up their seats for Jem, Scout, Dill, and Reverend Sykes? What does this show us?
9. As the examination begins, Atticus’ table is bare. What does this show us?

Students,

I truly do hope you have a restful and great Thanksgiving Break. We do have a bit of homework over the break, but it will be due the THURSDAY/FRIDAY after we get back from Thanksgiving break which means you have a lot of time to get it done.

Please read chapters 14, 15, and 16 of To Kill a Mockingbird. These chapters will NOT be read in class because we simply do not have time since we have read the majority of the book IN CLASS. There will be a To Kill a Mockingbird test that will cover questions from these chapters. The test will be given Thursday, November 29th and Friday, November 30th.

Don't forget to eat a lot and spend time with loved ones!
