It is VERY important that you INDENT each paragraph in your essay and start EACH paragraph with a TRANSITION WORD or PHRASE!

As I continue to grade last months essays, I have noticed a lot of you have forgotten to do this. Remember, in the FSA writing you will have to type your essay.

Part of the FSA rubric is ORGANIZATION; they expect you to ORGANIZE your essay by

- Starting each paragraph with a transition phrase (I gave you a TON of examples in your ICE packet)

- indenting (You can click on tab OR you can press space bar 5 times)

- Spacing in between each paragraph

I will be looking for these components in your TOM ROBINSON essay.

Due: 12/17/2018
Last Modified: 12/14/2018 2:49 PM

A couple of updates:

         * Next week, Monday, December 17th and Tuesday, December 18th, you will have a Reading Mid-Year Assessment that you will be taking during class. This will count as a  test grade for the 2nd nine weeks.

         * Your Tom Robinson FSA Argumentative Essay will be due on Wednesday, December 19th /Thursday, December 20th. Please be sure it is TYPED, PRINTED, DOUBLED SPACED on 12p. FONT. If you are going to be absent, send me the essay via email. If not it will be a "Z" in the grade book.

Below is an example from a student of a GREAT introduction paragraph with an even greater THESIS:

"Maycomb, Alabama is a prejudiced county deeply segregated and instilled with Jim Crow laws in the middle of The Great Depression. Not only is the nation's economy at a loss, so is the respect and social class of African American's in Harper Lee's coming-of-age novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. A negro, Tom Robinson, has been accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell, who stands at the bottom of Maycomb's social hierarchy. Four testimonies including that of Heck Tate, Maycomb's Sheriff and Bob Ewell, Mayella's father. Mayella Ewell, the prosecutor and Tom Robinson the defendant, are the epicenter of the case. Several inconsistencies in the alleged crime stirred doubts about Tom's guiltiness.   Therefore, Tom Robinson is not guilty because there was no medical evidence concerning Mayella's subsequent state and the inconsistencies of stories from supposed witnesses intensely contradict one another.

It has come to my attention that MANY of you are forgetting to put your name on your paper. Please know that this is NOT OKAY. It is not efficient and you will receive a "Z" in the grade- book until you claim your paper or quiz or test!

If you do happen to see a "Z" for something you turned-in, then DO NOT EMAIL ME. When you get to class, ask me to check the no-name pile.

When you do claim your paper, it will be a letter grade off. I counted a total of 25 papers today without names.

Writing your name is the VERY FIRST THING YOU DO THE SECOND YOU TAKE OUT A SHEET OF PAPER. Please, let's fix this issue ASAP!

Please be sure to read chapters 2 & 3 for homework.

Be sure to annotate using the annotation guide.

Ch. 2 & 3 Annotations should include:
- Annotate for vocabulary in both chapters
- Annotate the pg's that discuss Scout's and Miss Caroline's first day of school mishap. Scout is entering the exciting and perhaps, a bit confusing, world of school. Provide some thoughts on the instance that occurs.
- Annotate the characterization of Walter Cunningham.
- What happens with Scout and Walter Cunningham?
- How does Jem respond to Scout and Walter's situation?
- What do we learn about the Ewells in this chapter?
- What IMPORTANT LESSON DOES ATTICUS TEACH SCOUT in this chapter? What might this lesson possibly reveal about the novel's theme?

- What does this show about Jem?

* Please understand the above is just a GUIDELINE to the most important scenes (main ideas) in the chapters. However, you should be annotating beyond the aforementioned bullet points, the same way we went over in class when completing the Annotation Guide.

P.S. IF you read the chapters, you'll totally get it...
