Class overview
In Ceramics 1 & 2, the students will be introduced to the fundamental methods of forming clay into a three dimensional & two dimensional forms using a variety of clay building techniques. The student will learn basic Ceramic techniques such as hand building, pinching, slab, coiling, in addition to proper use and manipulation of clay tools & materials. Ceramics 3 Honors, builds upon the basic skills acquired in Ceramics 1 & 2. Students are expected to be able use subject appropriate vocabulary and critical thinking skills to problem solve when designing and developing sculptural clay pieces.

Objective
The student will demonstrate proper use and manipulation of Ceramic tools, use subject appropriate vocabulary when creating or critiquing works of art, and demonstrate understanding of the different sculpting techniques.

In order to complete this course students must meet the requirements in each of the following categories

Sufficient time will be provided for completion in class. Late work will only be accepted if fully completed and will result in a lower grade 

Assignments

A set of ceramic tools, is mandatory for this course.

Participation

25%

Students are expected to be actively participating in the class and have all materials ready for projects. Clean up will be factored into the participation grade.

*Note: We host an annual Art Showcase in which attendance is mandatory for ALL students taking AP Studio Art, Ceramics, Drawing and Painting, Art Appreciation, Photography, Digital Drawing.

Test

25%

Test’s will be administered with a minimum of a week’s notice. Test’s also consist of COMPLETED ceramic projects (construction, glazed, bisque fire, glaze fired)

Quiz

20%

Quizzes could be administered without notice.

Classroom Conduct
*Students that are observed mishandling art/ ceramic tools and materials will lose the privilege to continue to use any art/ ceramic materials. The student will then have to earn their grade through book work assignments.

› Ceramic Tool set with sponge – MANDATORY FOR CERAMICS LEVEL 1 (Michael’s, Blick Art Supply, Amazon, Jerry’s Artarama)
› 1 Box of Gallon size Zip Lock Bags

Please provide an email or attached letter specifying any special accommodations and or allergies the student may have and make sure to notify the school. 

Reminder: There is a class fee of $20 which MUST be paid at the school store online.  Deadline for lab fee is Friday, September 27th, 2019. Failure to pay will results in not being able to start working with clay projects.
