Mr. Jeffrey Dearing
Prior to joining the Doral Academy family, I taught English in Miami Dade County Public Schools for eleven years, beginning at Miami Springs Senior High, continuing with Ronald Reagan Doral Senior High, and culminating at the School for Advanced Studies, where I served as department chairperson for two years. I have taught ACT/SAT prep, AICE (Cambridge) English Language, AP English Literature, and AP English Language. Additionally, during my eighteen year tenure as an adjunct instructor of English at Miami Dade College, I taught English composition courses ranging from college preparatory writing to ENC 2301 (Advanced Composition).
As for my own education, after graduating from Miami Sunset Senior High, I attended the University of Florida before transferring to Florida International University where I earned a B.A. in Liberal Studies. After completing my undergraduate studies, I earned an M.A. in English and Creative Writing from Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia.
My teaching philosophy is best summed up this way: With the guidance of their teachers and parents, students need to discover for themselves what is meaningful. In my classroom, where we practice the Socratic method of enlightened conversation, I encourage students to connect our readings to the relevant realities of our times and of their own lives. I caution that while they live in a time of unprecedented access to information, young people must continually cultivate their capacity for critical thought if they are to remain happy, free, and virtuous citizens who can successfully navigate the complexities of modern life rather than become enslaved by them.
